Weather wrecks big day at Newclose

The first ever visit by the Lashings World XI to Newclose was wrecked by the weather on Sunday. The players of Ventnor and Lashings, together with three hundred people in the Marquee and a couple of hundred or so hardy souls around the ground, were forced to watch the rain fall all afternoon before umpires Steve Malone and Mick Blackman called the game off without a ball being bowled.

At least the Marquee guests had Henry Blofeld, Richie Richardson, Darren Gough, Devon Malcolm, Ed Giddins, Ian Harvey, Phil deFreitas and comedian Scott Charlton to entertain them over several hours with a variety of amusing stories, anecdotes and reminiscences before giving the audience an opportunity to participate in a question and answer session.

The tremendous support of event Sponsor HTP was acknowledged and thanks were given to Mike Scott, General Manager at Newclose, and to the members and friends of Ventnor and Newclose for their joint efforts before and on the day.

Darren Gough dances his way to Newclose with Lashings

Darren Gough, the former England fast bowler, will be the star attraction when Lashings World XI pay their first ever visit to Newclose County Cricket Ground this coming Sunday.

Gough, who retired from the professional game in 2008, played in 58 test matches and 159 one day internationals and is recognised as one of England s finest ever quick bowlers.

Dazzler s inclusion in the Lashings line up will not only be a major draw for cricket followers. Fans of BBC s Strictly Come Dancing will also be keen to catch a glimpse of the twinkle toed Yorkshireman who defied the odds to win the 2005 series to the delight of millions of viewers across the country.

Along with Gough in a strong Lashings World XI squad will be England internationals Devon Malcolm, John Emburey, Phil Defreitas and Ed Giddins; Pakistan stars Rashid Latif and Mohammad Akram; New Zealander Lou Vincent, Australian Ian Harvey, Indian Wassin Jaffa and West Indian Ritchie Richardson.
